The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine U.S. Navy type Mark I Boat Clock, made by Seth Thomas. It is mounted in a dust proof and moisture proof black phenolic case with a 3 1/4" dial. It features hour and minute hands on the main dial, with a smaller dial for the seconds. This is essentially a scaled down version of the larger "Deck Clock" which would have a 5 1/4" dial, and we assume were used on smaller boats and interior areas where the larger clock was not needed. This example has some material loss on the housing.

There is no warranty for this clock and returns for a non-working watch will not be honored. Please note all clocks are wound and tested then recorded on video before shipment. We are not in the repair business- ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

The case for the clock opens up to show the back, which shows the three small flathead screws holding the face to the case. The key is still present which winds the clock and sets the time. There is an adjustment for the speed of the clock, as well as a "STOP" hacking function to freeze the seconds for clock synchronization. We have wound the clock, and it keeps good time. There is a rotating internal cover for all the controls, and the tab on the lower right must be pushed in and moved to the right to uncover the adjustments. There is a chunk missing along the outer brim of the clock’s case.

The face reads as follows:

MARK I-BOAT CLOCK
U.S.

NAVY
N 21127, 1942
MADE BY SETH THOMAS IN U.S.A.

The Seth Thomas Clock Company was founded by Seth Thomas and began producing clocks in 1813. It was incorporated as the "Seth Thomas Clock Company" in 1853. The company manufactured clock movements for the Self Winding Clock Company from 1886 thru the early 1890s, in addition to its standard offering of longcase clocks, mantel, wall, and table-top clocks.

Many Seth Thomas clocks from 1881 to 1918 have a date code stamped in ink on the case back or bottom. Usually, the year is done in reverse, followed by a letter A—L representing the month. For example, April 1897 would appear as 7981 D, this example is a much later produced one and where the date code there is the serial number 21127.

On May 7, 1926, Seth Thomas Clock Company filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for trademark protection of the Seth Thomas brand with regard to clocks. The trademark was granted with a registration date of October 12, 1926 and assigned registration number 0219268. The trademark is still active as of the last renewal date of February 17, 2017.

Clock face measures approximately 3½” in diameter, with the base measuring nearly 6” in diameter. The clock is 4” deep. This example has some scratches on the face with the material loss but otherwise is in good working order.

The US Navy used these throughout WWII to help indicate the time while on the bridge or various other compartments of the ship, and afterwards. Would make a perfect clock for your office at work or at home!
