The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. This was purchased directly from David F. Machnicki, the author of At Arm's Length Trench Club book Series. This is a very nice Austrian-made bayonet for the Mannlicher Model 1895 straight pull bolt action Rifle, which was the principal Rifle of the FIRST WORLD WAR for the Austrian Empire. The M1895 bayonet was the first knife bayonet to feature an inverted blade profile, where the cutting edge faces upward when fixed. This example comes in its original scabbard and leather frog.

The bayonet is stamped with Œ over WG, the marking for Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company), abbreviated as ŒWG. Steyr Mannlicher firearm production was a part of this company. The reverse ricasso of the bayonet has the Austro-Hungarian Empire's Eagle proof mark stamped three times in different styles and sizes. The scabbard has the same marking, ŒWG, on the frog button. 585 is stamped on the crossguard.

Condition of the bayonet is very good, with the original bright finish still well retained, with very little oxidation or damage of any kind. There is however some minor wear to the wooden grip scales, which are now very dark. The scabbard is in great shape with an original leather frog still attached with minor wear.

A rare bayonet and scabbard from the Austro-Hungarian empire, ready to display or use!
