Original Item: Only One Available. US M1878 Canteen with a tan canvas cover with a very clear U.S. stencil on the front, in very good condition with the original issue sling. This example is very faintly marked on the front with a number, 76. The sling of this example is dated 1909 by Rock Island Arsenal, and is actually stamped at both ends of the strap with:
MACH. GUN
CO. 7TH INF.
N.G.C.
This would denote issue to the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, National Guard of California. This is a very unique unit marking that we’ve never seen before!
The canteen is complete with its original cork stopper secured to the neck of the canteen by a brass ring and chain. The cork itself is broken but is still present. It also has the proper pattern leather shoulder strap, of the later adjustable style in good condition.
There is some denting on the body, and the cover has the expected water stains and wear to the canvas. A great chance to pick up a good example of this iconic canteen!
