The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fair example of an early Indian War Model 1872 U.S. Army Regulation Kepi worn by an enlisted Cavalryman who was a member of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. This U.S. Army Model 1872 Kepi features fabric of dark blue wool broadcloth, with a painted leather visor, Moroccan leather sweatband, with black polished cotton lining in the crown. The crown stands 2 3/4" high at the front, 4 3/4" at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2" in diameter. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the back and stiffened with leather. This example dates to roughly 1885-1890 and is in outstanding condition with an original cloth chinstrap attached at the two buttons.

The front bears an enlisted crossed swords cavalry badge. The original leather chinstrap is present, being secured on each side of the cap by a Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War button. The interior of the kepi retains a maker’s mark:

Adelphia
Uniform Co., Inc.
1113 Walnut St.
Philadelphia, Pa.

The original leather sweatband is in good order with most or all stitching retained, with an intact size tag, 7.

An outstanding preserved example of an M1872 kepi! Comes ready for further research and display.
